Free Music Review: Absolute BUTCHERING of the original recording
Hit: 1 Stars

I Have tried in vain to find the original organic
recording of this classic on CD but end up dissappointed
every time. I guess the guys in the band thank this
new revamped electronic synthisized sound is really where
it's at. Well guess what---It totally BLOWS!!! Thank
God I still have my cassette version of this. If you
really want to know how Tres Hombres was supposed to sound
then try and find it on cassette.

Free Music Review: The chemistry comes together for their best effort
Hit: 5 Stars

ZZ Top's staying power is to be admired. It's hard for a blues-rock band to reinvent itself, but they managed it in the 80s. But before Eliminator, ZZ Top was pushing the envelope of the genre. 'First Album' has a lot of highlights and introduces us to Billy's fabulous guitar work. 'Rio Grande Mud' is a bit of a sophomore slump in my opinion. By the time they made it to their third go-round, something else had crept into the mix. A hint of soul or gospel or something, but it jells just right here with the other ingredients, making for a tasty treat that I like to pull out every once in a while and enjoy from first bite to last. The most important gift of a bluesman is the ability to tell stories, and there are some good ones here, including Master of Sparks and Sheik. This is a great driving disc, as the beats propel you along. Probably my only complaint is that it's over too soon and I'm looking for something as good to follow it up. I rank this one as their best, followed by Eliminator and First Album. Enjoy!

Free Music Review: One of ZZ Top's best efforts
Hit: 4 Stars

I have to admit I was just the tiniest bit disappointed when I first listened to the album. I had heard (and read) nothing but good about "Tres Hombres", and I've always enjoyed ZZ Top, so I expected a truly outstanding blues-rock classic.

And "Tres Hombres" IS good, but it's not quite great. There are several great songs here, and virtually no bad ones, but the overall quality of the songs is "only" enough for the album to be very good.

The groove is there, the blend of bluesy shuffles and rock n' roll has been perfected, and the musicianship is supreme, and this is not to warn off potential buyers in any way.
Just don't think that you're buying the world's greatest blues-rock record (that would be either Derek & The Dominoes' "Layla", or something by Stevie Ray Vaughan).

But what you will get if (when) you buy this album is ten good, sometimes even excellent, songs, including the magnificent slow blues "Hot, Blue And Righteous", the gutbucket rocker "Move Me On Down The Line", the classic "Jesus Just Left Chicago", and the John Lee Hooker-boogie of "La Grange".
And that's not too bad at all.

Free Music Review: HEY HEY HEY
Hit: 4 Stars

It's very enjoyable in a bubble gum chewing sort of way. This CD will not change your life but it certainly will get you to speed up when you drive your car.

Free Music Review: Prime ZZ Top
Hit: 5 Stars

TRES HOMBRES is ZZ Top in its prime. The opening two-fer of "Waitin' For The Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago" just cooks, and "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers", "Move Me On Down The Line, and "La Grange" are some white-hot boogie with interesting guitar playing. Of course discussing highlights is pointless, as TRES HOMBRES should be taken as a whole. ZZ Top were often as good as on this one, but they never made a better album than TRES HOMBRES.
