Free Music Notes for Tres HombresFree Music Review: Fantastic CD made better by being remixed Hit: 5 StarsThe whole CD is excellent. I would give it six stars if I could. The remastering added life to the CD. Gutsy blues, raw rock, and fantastic musicianship. If you buy one ZZ Top CD, hands down, this is the one.
Free Music Review: Beards optional Hit: 5 StarsI only ever owned the vinyl copy of this classic before recently purchasing it on CD, so I cannot comment on the previous re-worked CD release that is berated by previous reviewers. Eliminator may represent the bands commercial zenith, but for me this is the definitive album of one of the most enduring bands. Not that the later albums are without merit, but they seem to have been aimed at the wider audience. Over produced? Too much polish? On these albums the guitar work seems to have been held back. This album finds Billy Gibbons at his raw sounding bluesy best. It almost sounds like they have just returned from some downtown bar and decided to have a jam! Favourites for me are Move Me On Down The Line, La Grange and what was a teenage anthem for us, Beer Drinkers and Hell raisers, but maybe the best of all, the sublime Jesus Just Left Chicago. With the added bonus of a couple of live tracks thrown in, this is a must. Great stuff!!
Free Music Review: TEXAS BEER SOAKED BLUES & BOOGIE ! (ZZ Top's breakthrough album) Hit: 5 StarsTres Hombres (1973) was ZZ Top's third album, and it's what woke everybody up to this "little ol' band from Texas". The album is full of fantastic blues-rock guitar and rough-edged songs of stoned-cosmic-cowboy mischief and misadventure.
Tres Hombres starts out with the blues-rock workingman saga Waitin' For The Bus which crashes into Jesus Just Left Chicago, a blues account of the Messiah traveling cross-country. This 2-song medley is a ZZ Top classic that ranks right up there with the best of anything they've ever done.
Beer Drinkers And Hell Raisers is a rousing, guitar-crunching party anthem where guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill trade off lead vocals.
And how about that song about the best little whorehouse in Texas ("They gotta lotta nice girls!")? La Grange is classic blues-rock boogie at it's absolute best, with scorching lead guitar solos, hard driving bass, and Frank Beard's pounding drums. It's ZZ Top's signature song and nirvana for any blues-rock guitar fan.
Master Of Sparks (a wild ride in a pickup truck) and Precious And Grace (a wild ride with two scary hitchhiking women) are both stoned-cosmic-cowboy wild misadventures.
Shiek has some cool, trippy Jimi Hendrix guitar chords, Hot Blue And Righteous is cosmic slow blues, and the last song on the original album, Have You Heard, is a rocking ZZ Top classic that includes some gutsy slide guitar work and bluesy vocal harmonies.
This edition of Tres Hombres includes the bonus live cuts, Waitin' For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago and La Grange. All three are good rockin' fun.
The remastered sound on this reissue gets a thumbs-up, and the songs all sound better than ever. If you like your blues-rock on the rough side, and want it to boogie with a blazing guitar, some Texas smoke, and a few beers, you really can't go wrong with Tres Hombres.
Free Music Review: This is the best sounding CD ever on their best album! Hit: 5 StarsThis was the first ZZ Top album I bought back in 1974. I own several ZZ Top albums and although I enjoy them all, this one still remains my all-time favorite. Even back then what seperated them from other bands was their tightness and their driving beat. They also had an eerie and humorous touch on some of their great songs. Billy Gibbons is a magician with the guitar and Dusty Hill on his throbbing bass and Frank Beard on drums are both naturals. I honestly believe this group is a world-class band. In the 90's, this CD was released in an ultra slick sound of heavy reverb and punchy echo drums and to me it sounded SANITIZED. I still like it because the music was so good, but now it has been re-released with the original up front and natural sound and it seems to carry a big beat punch. It sounds a lot more authenic and like a real bar band on a moonbeamed Texas night. Tres Hombres in its original form is pure heaven for any guitar junkie. My Favorites: La Grange, Precious & Grace, Master of Sparks, Waitin for the Bus..oh well..the whole album is great! On My All Time Top 10.
Free Music Review: Huge Difference Hit: 5 StarsWow! I guess I never heard this recording before, just some third rate remix. I bought the ZZ Six Pack years ago, then upgraded to the single CDs to get the real drums.
This orignal mix sure is far different than those! All for the better! I've bought many CDs over and over again -- Zeppelin, Elton, Hendrix -- but this remaster is by far the most dramatic improvement! The drums are right in your face for one thing. The clarity of the all the instruments is stunning.
The extra live tunes are really raw and hint at the tone Billy uses on the new ZZ Top recordings.
Its a must buy!
