Free Music Notes for Tres Hombres

Free Music Review: Another 10-star ZZ Top album
Hit: 5 Stars

Conceptually, this is probably the strongest ZZ Top recording ever made. The blues-based rock sound is easy on the ears - even when turned up to the recommended listening volume of 140 decibels - and the lyrics are alternatively down-home, then light-hearted, and sometimes spooky. The band undoubtedly spent much time honing down each element of each song, and I think it's as perfect a sound as one could buy for love or money. When one listens to "Tres Hombres" in light of the two CDs which preceded it, one can appreciate how far ZZ Top traveled in a very short time, in order to hit the charts and remain true to its roots.

Free Music Review: "One of the Best"
Hit: 5 Stars

Tres Hombres is ZZTops third album. It follows the Texas Blues of the first two albums. A good choice for anyone looking for powerful guitar work combined with a bluesy background.

Free Music Review: Original Mix
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought the Six Pack but was disappointed with the re-mix. The remaster is true to the album mix. The added echo (most noticeable on the snare drum) is gone. The guitar on La Grange has the bite interleaved with silence that was so striking on the album. Buying the remaster is not a waste of money in this case and it is not because of the added live cuts.

Free Music Review: Hell Yeah!
Hit: 5 Stars

Lucky for me I have never heard the awful remix cd that others have commented about that came out before this gem was treated properly by the mighty Rhino Records. Looking through dusty vinyl, I would find this one but it was always scratched up pretty bad and for good reason as I would later find out. Last week this happened to me again and so I got on here to actually listen to some song samples. I like ZZ Top's sound a lot even though I only remember having Eliminator on tape but I found that their production was too thin and slick for my tastes and some of the lyrics were pretty predictable/weak. Well like others have said, this is an excellent release by ZZ Top when they wrote great songs, had thick and raw/heavy production besides being a complete outlaw no holds barred type of band. This belongs in every rockers collection for sure!

Free Music Review: Waitin for the mix all day
Hit: 5 Stars

It's about time. If you like the first 4 ZZ Top albums, definitely buy this CD. I bought the six-pack when it was released many years ago, and not being musically schooled, I really didn't notice much of anything wrong with them. Obviously, I had not listened to my tape copies of all of the original albums in a direct comparison. Sadly, I recorded over every old tape, except for Tejas. I had no more use for the tapes, I had it on CD, so I thought!!! It is only in the last few years that I have realized what was done to make the Six-Pack, mostly from reading Amazon reviews. (triggered drums, what's that all about? Now I know) My musical acuity has improved since the 1980s, and so I bought ZZ Top's Greatest hits on CD(it's the original analog), and listened to my old Tejas tape. Even though my Tejas is an N'th generation cassette copy, the original music completely stomps on the fake drum and echo effect of the CD version. The difference is like listening to a bad tribute band faking it, versus the real ZZ Top.

I'm glad that Rhino has brought out Tres Hombres and Fandango, and I hope that it doesn't stop here. Sad thing about all of this is, that on the back cover of "ZZ Top's First Album", there is a diatribe against modern studio effects, and how it was ruining real music back in 1971. "ZZ Top's First Album" was to be about real musicians playing real instruments. 17 years later, they were guilty of studio chicanery themselves. I've tried to find the exact quote from the cover, but I cannot. If someone has the actual text, I'd love to have it posted here.
