Free Music Review: A Piece of Musical History
Hit: 4 Stars

This to me is a long awaited and long overdue release of this now cult movie soundtrack that was slated by the critics at the time and to a degree rightly so. Having owned the vinyl version of it for many years, It comes with a weighty reputation of Gerry Garcia's work on it. As a long time "deadhead" I have searched in vain for the outtakes from this soundtrack for a number of years.

A two disc set, the first disc mirrors the original vinyl version on which Pink Floyd flex their psychedelic muscles in their unique and as only the Floyd of the period knew how. Then there is the eclectic mixed of The Kaleidoscope with their fusion of country with psychedelia these are not their best efforts...try Side Trips and the even better A Beacon from Mars. There is offered a taste of the Grateful Dead's Dark Star and in my opinion Gerry Garcia's Love Scene is the Star of this disc.

Where this album comes alive is on disc two the Garcia and Floyd outtakes. The Garcia's outtakes they were recorded live whilst Garcia was watching the scenes. The original released version being an amalgamation of the four takes here. Garcia was just sat on a stool in the middle of a sound studio watching the scenes and just making it up as he went along and what you get is a demonstration of the man's awesome virtuosity and some truely beautiful music.
The Floyd tracks are far more restrained than the Floyd of the time and shows a glimpse of what is to come later. Kind of the taster for Darkside of The Moon and on....and also an unexpected side to them a solid blues workout Love Scene Version 6. Followed by a suprising track featuring Rick Wright brilliant but untypical Floyd piano playing.

If this your bag then you will not be disappointed and the set is worth it for the outtakes as it shows the prowess of both Pink Floyd and Gerry Garcia, oh and nice liner notes from Robert Fricke, and a few words from Gerry's wife, Deborah Koons Garcia

Free Music Review: Zabriskie Point Sound Track-Oldies Still Goodies
Hit: 4 Stars

This sound track is chock full of out takes of a lot of the music from the age when this film was made. For those of us who lived at that time, it is reminescent of the music we came to know of at that time.

The Pink Floyd tracks are much of the music that followed the departure of Syd Barrett. Rather spacy and drifting.

The real gems are the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Youngbloods tracks. Listening to them carries me back to that time. Sitting around, sometimes present and sometimes drifting listening to this music was a great way to live at the time.

It is wonderful to have this sound track as a part of my collection.

This soundtrack has high and low points (much more high points). As low points, I can include the Kaleidoscope's songs (straight-forward country). The highlihghts are: "Love Song", by Jerry Garcia (about seven mesmerizing minutes of electric guitar piece), "Dance of the Death", by John Fahey (a fantastic acoustic guitar player) and the Floyd's songs "Hearbeat, Pigmeat" and "Come In, Number 51, Your Time Is Up" (a different version of "Careful With That Axe, Eugene".

Really good album anyway, and the bonus disc is really worth having. Several tracks by Jerry Garcia, plus several by Pink Floyd. The extra tracks are out-takes they didn't use on the film; the Jerry Garcia ones all from the Love Scene track. Very very nice.

And the booklet with the cd was really informative, lots of pages, lots of background info. Very good.

Free Music Review: For a PF fan and collector....
Hit: 4 Stars

I know it's hard to enjoy any Antonioni's film, however, the songs PF prepared for this movie are teh preparing songs for some of DSOTM songs such as Us and Them....

It's not all PF, however, it's to date the most complete set of PF songs dedicated to this movie.

A must have until a better PF-only OST comes along. (If it ever does)
