Free Music Notes for Alcohol Fueled Brewtality LiveFree Music Review: Wonderful (but raw) CD Hit: 5 StarsI really love Zakk and BLS so I am biased but this CD really surprised me and I listen to it constantly. No, it is not a perfect studio recording, but it is exactly what it should be...a live recording with some rough edges. I hate Limp Bizkit too but his comment about them and the constant yelling about beer are the only negatives on this CD. The studio CD is hit and miss but mostly good.
Free Music Review: Good old fashioned, honest to God, hard as nails rock! Hit: 4 StarsLet's be honest, we all knew what to expect from this live BLS CD - and boy does it deliver. "....Brewtality" gives us a representative sample of tracks from Sonic Brew and Stronger Than Death in their natural environment - live on stage, warts 'n' all in front of an unruly and boozed up crowd. Live albums have a propensity to be disappointing - poor sound, average performances etc.(hello Mr. Danzig!), but every once in a while one comes along which really hits the spot. This is one such CD. It's not that it's the best recorded live album I've ever heard or that the performances are outstanding. What makes this one so damn good is that it is honest, unpretentious and true to itself and you have to like it for that. This is Zakk Wylde and BLS saying "this is us live -sometimes we smoke and sometimes we screw up, but hey, we are always 100%". Basically I would imagine (having not seen them live) that this CD captures the band in the live setting perfectly, even if they themselves are not perfect. If you liked the studio stuff then check this out - you will warm to it immediately. And really that's what it's all about - sheer bloody minded rock 'n' roll and top class entertainment! A final word of advice - there's a version of this CD on release which has an extra studio disc with 5 tracks. It consists of two covers (Neil Young + Sabbath) and three originals. It's a mix of electric / acoustic and is not a million miles away from the vibe of Zakk's Book of Shadows CD. It's outstanding. A real 5 star winner. If you can get your hands on this version, do so.
Free Music Review: Vintage Zakk...[TICKED] OFF AXE MASTER! Hit: 5 StarsZakk Wylde and the Black Label Society is one of the finest, hard-edged music acts around, and this double CD backs up that claim. As always, Zakk Wylde's virtuous guitar skills are in full effect. Even better, he's pissed off and uninhibited in letting his listener know it. The best comes thirty seconds into "Superterrorizer," when Zakk cuts his shredding riff and yells "Limp Bizkit sucks d--k!" That likely turned off a few people (Fred Durst being no exception, obviously), but I loved it! Also, his war cry of "DRINK BEER" rocks, too. If you love balls to the wall metal/rock, with solid musicianship, this live album, along with his studio releases, are highly recommended. You won't be disappointed. It's just shocking this guy isn't selling out major venues, which is a sad commentary of the general public's taste in music. Nevertheless, this stuff is damn good and must not be passed.
Free Music Review: Good Live Album Hit: 4 StarsI got this the day it came out and listened to it a few times. It is a good live album in that it captures the performance just like a live album should - mistakes and all. If you want to hear the songs in perfect form, get the studio albums. In true Zakk form, his guitar work is excellent - his voice is not. He was never known for his voice anyway. The second disc is excellent. His covers of Neil Young and Black Sabbath give the songs a different twist. I would recommend this disc to people who appreciate a genuine live perfomance. If you need the songs to be in their purest form, this is not the disc for you.
Free Music Review: Lay Off of the Booze Hit: 1 StarsI like some of the guitar arrangements of these songs, but Zakky needs to take care of his voice! I think firing the drummer that played on the albums was a mistake also. I saw them on the Sonic Brew tour and they were excellent. This is lack-luster. The drummer changes some of the drum beats in order to make it more simple, and there are a lot of mistakes, and his drum fills are far less than brilliant. It makes it hard to listen to the songs I love, when they are not played right, or really even close. And I agree with zakk about Limp Bizkit, but dissing them like that on a live album is so immature and childish, and totally uncalled for. There is something wrong with this guy, he beats up his drummer, guitar tech, etc, and the music suffers. The studio disc is ok, but not as great as any of the BLS albums, or my personal favorite album EVER, Book Of Shadows. The drummer sounds like a wind-up drummer, totally stiff and lacks any style. The rest of the band jams! This was fairly painful to listen to my favorite artist falling apart like this...I reccommend his solo album Book Of Shadows, or the first two Black Label Society albums, but not this beer-coaster.
