"Kings of Damnation: '98-'04" covers pretty much everything Zakk has done on his own when he's not axe-slinging for Ozzy. There's 2 tracks from his Pride & Glory project, 2 tracks from his solo album, "Book of Shadows," 2 songs from "Sonic Brew," 2 songs from "Stronger Than Death," 3 tracks from "1919 Eternal," 3 songs from "The Blessed Hellride," 3 songs from "Hangover Music Vol. VI" & 2 unreleased tracks. That's 19 songs from the mighty Mr. Wylde. I could definitely argue with the song selection & I certainly think there was enough material to warrant a double-disc compilation. However, Spitfire doesn't do too bad a job accumulating all of Zakk Wylde's product in one place. Including his pre-BLS days with selections from both "Pride & Glory" and "Book of Shadows." This disc will be a great introduction to newcomers & long-time fans will enjoy having a lil' bit of Zakk from throughout his career in one place. Along with 2 brand-new tracks. "Kings of Damnation: '98-'04" may be the title of this record but we all know who the one & only king really is!

"Kings Of Damnation" was the first compilation of Zakk Wylde's work to be released and originally came out in October 2005. It features tracks from across his career with Spitfire Records including "Pride & Glory", his solo album "Book Of Shadows" and the Black Label Society studio records . It also features two previously unreleased tracks "Doomsday Inc" and "SDMF" which are only available here.Zakk's work as guitarist for Ozzy and his solo work are two completely different beasts. His guitar for the Prince of Darkness works largely within a mainstream framework while his solo playing and writing often showcase an entirely different side. He's no one-trick-pony and "King of Damnation: Era 1998-2004" showcases the best of his varied interests. The collection from his days on the Spitfire label goes from blues-chugging Southern boogie ("Losing Your Mind"), to hard driving Pantera-like thrash ("Bleed for Me") to acoustic pieces best illustrate how his versatility meets his virtuosity ("TAZ" and "Takillya"). The two new songs on this collection are the slower, harder numbers "SDMF" and "Doomsday, Inc.". His vocals are not the most exciting for Rock, but that's not what you're here for. After all, his playing is vast and technical, going from solid riffing to intricate solo in a matter of moments. If you're a rock or metal fan looking to find a way into this guitar man's catalog, this is the perfect place to start. -- Robert Arambel
