Free Music Review: Not What I Expected

I really enjoy the entire Zenon series, and I bought the CD hoping to snag a little bit of the movies' space adventure spirit and capture it on my iPod. There are a few songs that I could listen repeatedly -- "Outta This World" is pretty good, and the remix of "Supernova Girl" is much better than its original. I was really looking for the song "The Galaxy is Ours" which was composed for the previous movie "Zenon: The Zequel," but beware -- although it's listed here as the same song and the clip on Amazon's front page sounds similar, it is not the same song. The "space sounds" have been taken out, making this song a regular ol' electric guitar song that lacks the motion and excitement of its predecessor. All in all, I'd say that it's good if you're a space nut like me and want a little taste of the future in music form...just don't expect great things from the majority of the CD if you're 15 or older.

It's safe to say that the next generation of sci-fi fans isn't going to be over the moon about this soundtrack--its three fists-in-the-air anthems are unmistakably girlie, and artist names like Cassiopeia aside, the songs have more to do with teen self-discovery than outer space--but it's not without a minipod of stellar moments. Kristian Rex's trippy "Supernova Girl (Z3 Remix)" could send 20-somethings twirling into the stratosphere alongside targeted tweens, and the Super Novas' instrumental "Outa Space" succeeds mightily in its mission to get listeners reeling in the intergalactic feeling. Even Selena the Moon Goddess's supercharged cover of Madonna's "Lucky Star" is not entirely unpraiseworthy. Still, there's the sense that this disc barely survived being scrubbed: unless one of these one-off artists hit it big, kids will be left looking for a superstar. What they'll find instead are fictional pop-posturers like Cosmic Blush, who belts her way through a song called "Out of this World." Which isn't. --Tammy La GorceChildren's Music Music CDs
