Free Music Review: Breezy listening, but not quite the nirvana advertised

I'm probably the only reviewer on the planet not gushing over the latest release of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker (Zero 7). Dubbed the "British `Air'" by many magazines - though that label gets thrown at nearly every downtempo band with a hit - Simple Things has many of the same affects as those French maestros. Heck, `Give it Away' comes one degree shy of copying Air's `All I Need,' while `Red Dust' liberally borrows their production gear. Elsewhere, they show the key elements to a warm chillout album (airy chords, orchestral strings, the occasional low-key cooing of a songstress) yet never quite tie it all together. `Polaris', for one, comes off as a lazy jam-band effort.
Now, the aforementioned `Give it Away' certainly is a subdued darling, and `This World' delivers a smooth dose of soul. `In the Waiting Line' wraps you within its soft-blanket chorus, Sophie Barker's voice offering the best track of the album. Yet most pieces, though skillfully produced, lack the inspirational spark to rise above understated stereo filler. Breezy listening but not quite the blissful nirvana advertised.
