Free Music Notes for The GardenFree Music Review: 5 Stars for Zero 7... and for the under a groove series Hit: 5 StarsI love the exploration of soul, jazz and pop, by the group Zero 7. They make great new soul and jazz/pop over lanugishing electronica beats. However, sometimes their sound can be too mellow.
When I want to step up my mood a bit I put on these two comps I discovered which have a great fusion of funky deep house and new funk and soul.
Paris Under a Groove and San Francisco Under a Groove are full of new artists who create a new brew of dance and electronica. These albums showcase what is beautiful and unique about funk and soul electronica fusion music. Just passing on the good word. Check it out and enjoy.
Free Music Review: 3.5 stars, really Hit: 3 StarsVery different from the other 2 albums. Not a lot of standouts. "If I can't have you" is my favorite song, I can't get it out of my head. Not sure that I like a lot of the vocals on the other songs. Still a good album in the chill genre. It works by having a singular vibe.
Free Music Review: A triple surprise Hit: 5 StarsEver since I discovered "Simple Things" and "When It Falls" together sometime during 2004, I've been regularly looking for new Zero 7 releases. When I first checked out this record I was like "What on earth is David Crosby doing on a Zero 7 album?". Then I paid closer attention and no, it wasn't Crosby: it was Lindsey Buckingham. Then again, no.
Finally I decided to stop guessing and looked it up, and wwwhoa who the hell is Jose Gonzalez, and why is he singing in English? OK, some guy from Miami or LA, I thought. Nevertheless, I kept looking and soon came up with the info that Gonzalez is SWEDISH?
This was getting a little too global for me, and by this time I was way too intrigued to go back to work. I googled my way further into the net, and lo and behold: Jose Gonzalez is a Swedish citizen of Argentinian descent. I'm Argentinian, dammit!
Practically in shock by the sheer amount of information I had taken up in a couple of minutes, I went back to just listening to the album.
And the bottom line is, Hardaker and Binn have outdone themselves again. I found "When It Falls" better than their debut, and after a couple of listens I am becoming increasingly convinced that this is an even better album. I love people who can change direction while remaining themselves, and that's exactly what these guys have done here.
Sia Furler is simply delicious -again- and my man Josecito is the newest member in my personal Club of Favourite Soulful Tenors, alongside the aforementioned Crosby, Buckingham, and so many others.
Argentinian descent, dammit.
If this is what all these years of crisis and migrating Argentines lead to, then long live the global turmoil!!
Free Music Review: Doesn't approach early stuff (IMHO) Hit: 3 StarsAs a huge(!) fan of Simple Things and to a lesser extent When it Falls, I was excited to read other reviewers positive comments about The Garden. On first listen however, I felt that the duo had taken another step downward with this album. After repeated listenings I am definitely a bigger fan of this album than I was at first, but (sadly) I'm becoming more convinced that Simple Things was an accomplishment that these guys might never attain again. I hope I'm wrong and I'm still glad I purchased The Garden.
Free Music Review: California dreaming Hit: 4 StarsThis release made me feel like I was in california wine country. Though different from the previous two releases, I think true fans will appreciate their ability to diversify. It's a good summertime release. If you are having a summer cocktail party anytime soon, put this one in and have your friends guess who it is, don't tell them right away.
