Free Music Review: A Christian Masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

This was the first dc Talk album I ever heard, and from the moment I listened to it, I've been a rampant fan of Toby, Mike and Kevin. This is a simply superb album. I will compare this to all the other DCT albums. Overall, there is only rap in 2 songs as opposed to all the songs in their 3 previous albums, and none at all in Supernatural. A much more rocky sound than Free At Last, their previous release. No hip-hop sounds or beats. Since it appears no one has done a complete song overview, I'll take on that feat.

So Help Me God: A great way to open a great album. Slick guitar riffs make this on of the most rocky songs on album. The lyrics are essentially a prayer for help to turn back to the Lord. Superb opener.

Colored People: Since DCT is made up of two white guys and a black guy, the theme of anti-racism is a commonly used one in their albums. A definitely slower tune than the previous one. The lyrics are about, you guessed it, not being cold or resistant to "colored people". I think that the song "Walls" from DCT's second release, Nu Thang, is a better song about racism, but better musically, not lyrically. The lyrics are very similar. Also a tribute, if you will, to God's creativity in not just creating white people, but people of all different colors.

Jesus Freak: Introducing the all-time greatest, most popular song ever to be recorded by a Christian artist! This song is very popular and I can understand why. One of two songs on this album that has rap. A definite rock-type song, joined seamlessly to Toby's rapping makes this easily the best song on the album. The lyrics are about not caring what your friends and family will do when they find out you've become a "Jesus Freak" (Christian). Amazing.

What If I Stumble: A slower song about being there for friends, and frineds being there for you, and always being true to your close friends. Also Kevin Max is contemplating why he's in the CCM business: to honor God or to make money.

Day by Day: An intersting tune for sure. Catchy little beat. The lyrics are essentially a prayer to help the singer to be a better Christian, "day by day". Slower at first, then it breaks into a smooth rock beat at the chorus.

Mrs. Morgan: A dopey little speech by "Mrs. Morgan" about being the next door neighbor to the Gotee Records studio (Gotee Records produced this album) and how she heard the drummer all day, and then went over and said she couldn't stand to hear the drummer any longer, and if he hit the drum one more time, he'd be a dead drummer. A little comedy mixed in, I guess. Definitely skippable.

Between You And Me: About confessing a sin to friend, or perhaps the Lord. Slower, but still catchy. The only thing close to a hip-hop beat on the whole album. Lyrically solid.

Like It, Love It, Need It: A sweet beat from the beginning, very cool. The guitars break in in the chorus. The lyrics are sort of a random musing about how the Lord is the only One who can ultimately satisfy your longings. Will tell you about the things that WON'T bring you peace of mind as well. Great rap at the end, combined with a nifty guitar solo, and some strange sayings of "like it, love, need it" I can't really describe it in words. Kind of yelling, but not really. One notch below yelling, we'll say.

Jesus Freak (Reprise): This song could easily ruin this whole album if it weren't so short. Amazingly stupid operatic singing. Incredibly annoying, Skip it.

In The Light: This is one of my favorite songs on the album. About wanting to be like Christ, or "in the light" as in John 3: 19-20 where it says " This is the judgement, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, becuase their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed." So this song is saying the singer wants to be in Christ, not the darkness.

What Have We Become: The lyric are about wondering where righteousness has gone. Or what happened to morals. Very powerful lyrics, very meaningful in today's world. The tune is slower until the chorus, where it picks up a little.

Mind's Eye: Very neat beat, guitars are well-placed in the melody. About going through life with Jesus at your side, with you every step.

Untitled Track: This one starts with the intro of So Help Me God, then goes into complete silence for over 2 minutes. Then you're surprised with a few classical piano notes and the poem "Alas My Love" by K-Max, and then a simple string solo with drums.

Overall, this is a fantastic album. I highly recommend it!

Jesus Freak Poster

Jesus Freak, like the 1970s phrase that it's culled from, is an oddity. Who could have ever imagined such a wonderful blend of grunge rock, rap, melodic pop, and funk? "So Help Me God" sets the tone with a wicked guitar riff that draws boundaries for the trio's magic harmonies. "What If I Stumble?" and the vastly underrated "Between You and Me" allow Michael Tait to showcase his silky smooth vocals, while "Jesus Freak" and "Mind's Eye" prove the band can change speeds and rock as hard as anyone. For good measure, they even improve upon Charlie Peacock's "In the Light." One of the best Christian CDs of the '90s. --Michael Lyttle
