Free Music Notes for Jesus FreakFree Music Review: DOESNT DO IT FOR ME Hit: 1 StarsI have a hard time listening to most pop music that tries just a little bit too hard to please. The fact that this is Christian music makes it even harder. I am not a Christian but I have always loved old fashioned Gospel music , both black and white. In 1967 Elvis Presley recorded his Grammy award winning album "How Great Thou Art".To me this the greatest album ever released by a popular singer. The album is amazing in every respect. Elvis didnt try to conform to any particular audience. This is what made the album so special. Elvis wanted to do the Gospel music he grew up with ,so for this album he gathered the finest singers and musicians in Gospel music and the results were spectacular. Even listening to this album today ,you can see the originality he always brought to his music. Now almost 40 years later we have DC talk .If you enjoy the pop music of today then you will probably like this. If you are looking for something original you will be disappointed. It is just the same boring manufactured pop music you hear all the time. The Christian lyrics make it sound even weirder.Im sorry if I offend anyone but Im only giving my musical opinions. The upside is if this music is making people happy then its doing its work . For me personally its too mainstream and predictable. Peace to all.
Free Music Review: This is the rest of the Christianity Hit: 5 StarsI should be doing homework right now, or at least reviewing a more recent album. But something compelled me to do this now. I owned this album once before, in 1997. But my father didn't like it at first, and before he thought twice he snapped it in half, never to be heard from again. After having DCTalk grow on him, he bought it for me again for Christmas of 2003. I don't have much time to write as much as on my other reviews, but listen closely. This album is the most gripping, thought-provoking, heart-wrenching cd I've heard yet about how hard it is to follow God and to put up with all the criticism Christians recieve from the world. It's not easy, and it's not all glorious. It's a struggle every day to be crucified emotionally like Christ was physically. It's the only way we can keep our pride down. DCTalk illustrates these points flawlessly with Jesus Freak. There's a sad but true quote featured on "What If I Stumble" sayind "The biggest cause of Atheism in the world today is Christians...that is what an unbelieving world finds simply unbelievable." That's pretty much the tone of this cd. My personal favorite is "What Have We Become" which has a same tone, but individually and single-handedly speaks on behalf of the rest of the world against the Christians that really are hypocrites. Being a Christian myself, but also imperfect as I am human, I understand the pain of being so misunderstood. But "What Have We Become" comforts me, yet saddens me, in telling me that there are worse things to do than to lie or think badly about someone, but that I am also a contributor to the world's long list of reasons to insult Christians. It tells tales of a preacher being racist, and a Christian married couple who rejects their child. This album isn't pretty, but it is beautiful if you can understand that...Come soon, Jesus. This album reminds us of the fact that we won't last much longer without you...not even the Christians.
Free Music Review: Bar none, the very best Christian Rock cd ever put out Hit: 5 StarsThis album is without a doubt the very best Christian rock cd ever put out. Few people realize this but dc Talk were one of the first band - and certainly the first Christian band - to mix rap with rock. Every song on this cd is a classic but my personal favorites are: Jesus Freak Day by Day In my mind's eye In the Light The songs are upbeat and the message is a positive one. If you only buy it one Christian cd, make it this one and you won't be sorry.
Free Music Review: A Shocker Hit: 5 StarsBeing a fan of many musical genres, it seemed only a matter of time before I began listening to Christian rock/rap/r&b/gospel/etc. I was first exposed to Christian artists such as Michael W. Smith and Steven Curtis Chapman. As my "secular" tastes changed, however, I wanted to explore more of Christian music's offerings. I found early on that most Christian artists who didn't sing gospel music were usually carbon copies of mainstream, secular bands who didn't sing about sex or drugs. Thankfully, the good Lord saw this and brought along groups such as PFR, the Newsboys and DC Talk. These groups sang their own style of music and revealed to us that Christianity isn't always good times at the church social, but an ever-changing lifestyle that brings with it persecution, humility and pain beyond mortal man's imagination. Perhaps that is why I was originally drawn to "Jesus Freak" and a multitude of albums from other artists who were brave enough to stand up to the preachers and say, "You've got to reach out to people on terms that they understand." You won't here Twila Paris or Sandi Patti singing about racism or how your personal image can destroy the impressionable minds of others. DC Talk does. "What If I Stumble" is a question that I see very few so-called Christians asking themselves these days. With no intent to sound preachy or high and mighty, most folks these days who claim to be washed in the blood seem to wash their hands of those people that they should be reaching out to. I used to be a Protestant, but I grew weary of the hypocrites that I saw in the bar on Saturday and then the pew on Sunday. Now a Catholic, I realize that hypocrisy bleeds over into all religious belief systems, because there are just as many hypocritical Catholics as there are Protestants. Moving on, "Jesus Freak" is the ultimate, in-your-face testament to being a Christian. But even it begs the question, "What will people think?" In the end, however, we learn that it doesn't matter what others think so long as we are living the way we should. There is no hiding your true self, advice which many Christians should heed."In the Light" is a Charlie Peacock tune that shows us a Christian struggling to be more like Jesus, and less like a man. It shows a person just how complicated internally that a real Christian can be. "Colored People" may seem like a song about race on the surface, but its underlying theme is that we should not only get along with each other, but embrace each other for our differences instead of looking down on people whom we feel are less than us. This album throws chinks in the armor of Christianity. It reveals the doubts and fears of true Christians, something rarely sung about in contemporary Christian music. Once again, it took rock n' roll to reveal what TRUE Christians are made of. They aren't perfect, and they know it. Yet they don't badger those who may not "look" as Christian as they do. You quickly realize that TRUE Christians are not some snobby group of people who try to force their beliefs on others, but they have fears and concerns like everybody else, and they do not alienate themselves from others because they are different. As a matter of fact, a true Christian WILL be in the bars on Saturday, but he'll bring a few friends to church with him on Sunday, instead of trying to hide from the other churchgoer he saw plastered on the sidewalk of a local dive. Buy this album if you want a taste of real Christian concerns, and not the plastic Christianity that so many of us have to deal with each day.
Free Music Review: THE GREATEST Hit: 5 Stars"Jesus Freak" was the first DC Talk abum I bought. When I first listened to it I thought,"oh yeah another rock group trying to sound cool". But once I actually listened to the lyrics and music, it became one of my favorite CD's of all time! They really did an awesome job of putting the lyrics, melody, and even the order of the songs together with Toby's raping and Kevin and Mihael's vocals. Not only did it sound awesome, but the spiritual message that DC Talk is trying to send in the album really reach's you if you pay attention to the lyrics. Right after DC Talk's big album, "Free at Last" got it's fame, the group started recording "Jesus Freak". They weren't really sure how it would affect the listeners. They had no idea that it would be the biggest album from DC Talk, and one of the biggest Christian albums ever released! It sold over 2 million copy's since it's release and won DC Talk Dove Awards Artist of the Year in 1996... If you haven't already bought a DC Talk CD then this is definitely the one for you. (listen to the first 15 seconds of "What if I Stumble"
