Free Music Notes for A Wonderful World

Free Music Review: Bennett still a legend at 75
Hit: 5 Stars

Tony Bennett sounds on this album as good as he sounded twenty years ago. The slightly cracked quality in his voice remains, but he struggles less with long notes than on his most recent albums. In particular, this album is a massive leap forward from the eclectic showboating of Playin' With My Friends.

It has long been a mystery to Bennett fans why Mr B did not do a full album with k.d. lang much sooner - their voices blend together so perfectly.

Here, Tony Bennett is paying tribute to a man he cares about - Louis Armstrong. He is singing material that he empathises with - no modern concessions. The arrangements on the album are superb - and hint back to his best work of the 1960s.

In short this is an album by an artist, who, whilst no longer at the peak of his powers, is still able to deliver a fine performance when focused on the material. He finds that focus on this splendid album.

Free Music Review: "You Can Depend On..." This One
Hit: 5 Stars

Louis Armstrong is my favorite instrumentalist AND vocalist of all time. So, we have Tony Bennett (the best old style jazz singer still kicking) and K.D. Lang...well, what do you say about K.D. Lang? Just the best voice in so-called country and easily one of the top four vocalists in jazz (with Cassandra Wilson, Diane Reeves and Diana Krall). Now we have these premier singers doing Louie songs. How about that cover of "Exactly Like You". Oh man. I listened to that one four times before I went on the rest of the album. Every song is exquisite. "What a Wonderful World" is my numero uno song on the hit parade of all songs ever written. What a great cover. And dig that cover of "Lucky Old Sun". Whoa. I had to go through that one three times before moving on to "If We Never Meet Again".

So on my fifth listening to this CD, I'd say T-Bone hit another one out of the park...

Free Music Review: An Odd Couple That Works Wonderfully Together!
Hit: 5 Stars

As a fan of the "the great American songbook" and jazz vocals in general, I was a tad skeptical when I heard that Tony Bennett and k.d. lang had teamed up to record an album. But from the first song, I knew the pairing was bang on. His slightly scratchy but assured and familiar voice is complemented very, very nicely by k.d. lang's supple, throaty vocals. Ms. Lang is a versatile chanteuse -- and a dynamic live performer (I saw her early in her career, when she was still doing strictly country music) -- but I was still surprised to hear how well she holds her own on this effort. Together, these two voices are a synergistic delight -- and the instrumentation is lush, never overpowering. To sum up -- this is a CD to play over and over and over again, over dinner, during cocktails, while falling asleep, or engaging in whatever pursuit takes your fancy ;-).

Free Music Review: A Wonderful Pairing
Hit: 5 Stars

Pairing k.d. Lang and Tony Bennett was a stroke of musical genius. The magical synergy between them, the combination of two such diametrically opposite vocalists, the obvious chemistry between them is wonderful to behold. Tony has never been better, and k.d. displays the full range of her vocal talents effortlessly and perfectly in sync with Tony's flawless pop/jazz style. It is a masterful collaboration on every track, but "Exactly Like You" and "What A Wonderful World" are exceptionally good. This is an essential purchase if you collect either artist. It has all the makings of a great classic album from two of the greatest vocalists around today. Bennett proves conclusively with this gem that great vocal artistry is possible at any age and at any stage of one's career. I only hope there's 'A Wonderful World Part Two."

Free Music Review: Lazy Sundays and Lounge ...
Hit: 5 Stars

Tony Bennett shows no sign on slowing down and when you mix k.d. lang's languid vocals, you have a wonderfully lazy album to enjoy while frittering away a Sunday afternoon. "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" and "That Lucky Old Sun" are wonderful and beautifully done. k.d. lang is a fantastic torch singer, giving us an intimate vocal with the barest hint of jazz accompanimentI believe one reviewer mentioned the absence of a trumpet. This is true. In my humble opinion, I think the artists have paid a great tribute to the source material by using the dusky low notes of a sax to complement their voices instead of having someone emulate Louis' trumpet playing ... which should be left alone as stand alone music, if that makes sense. Give this CD a try and you will be hooked after the first listen, I promise!
