Free Music Notes for Hymns of the 49th ParallelFree Music Review: Sensual Canadian Listening Hit: 5 StarsThis cd is a beautiful mellow exploration of Lang's voice. It's the type of tune for low music at a nice dinner or getting a massage. I enjoyed the cover tunes and Canadian theme--to me, that says purpose. Often the tunes are reflective and do really show off a beautiful range of Lang's voice. Hallelujah is the one of the songs that brings memories to mind and it makes you want to sing loudly as if in church.
Free Music Review: The Most Accomplished Female Vocalist Of Our Time Hit: 5 StarsI have read many of the rewiews of this album. Most of the disagreements seem to be on the subject of Ms. Lang's (or ms. lang's) choice of cover songs. I am in the camp that believes that her songs are well-chosen. What seems to be missing from these reviews is that we are all blessed by her voice, which soars on this CD. She sings beautifully and does not falter in pitch or phrasing. More importantly, she wrings from each song emotions that other singers have never discovered. Even though not on this album, "Crying" (the duet with Roy Orbison) still has the ability to touch my soul.
Free Music Review: Framing for a beautiful voice Hit: 5 StarsK.D. shows off what she is, a terrific singer. I liked her work with Tony Bennett; stretching our ears as listeners to see how complex she is. This is better, like other reviewers, the minimal approach that allows us to enjoy just K.D. and her talent is a wonderful gift.
If you want to get pumped up, this isn't for you. If you want beautiful music for a nice drive, a quiet evening, or for a great meal, this might be just the ticket.
Free Music Review: ethereal and longing Hit: 5 StarsThe beauty of this album is it's sparseness. I can not convey enough how risky and brilliant this is. From obscure tracks like Fallen to the more familiar (Case of You, Hallelujah) she studies the song and plants her thumb firmly on the core. And not in a "studied" way, but in a literate, passionate, loving way. To say she takes Case of You to astral heights is not granting it full due. I have never heard a Joni Mitchell cover taken so gently in one's hands, yet experienced so fully. Her voice was made for songs such as these.
And I can not serve Love is Everything properly, you simply must hear it's melancholic words and her treatment to know what that heartbreak feels like.
This album touches me in ways, subtle, longing, and sweet that few albums have. And k.d. deserves much credit for challenging herself and her audience with such art.
Free Music Review: Hallelujah! Hit: 4 StarsThis CD is worth buying just for the "Hallelujah" track. All of the songs are good, but that one really moves me. She has such a gorgeous voice. I wish she would sing some more familiar songs, songs that would really show off her powerful, silky smooth voice.
