Free Music Notes for Hymns of the 49th ParallelFree Music Review: How can one not love this? Hit: 5 StarsThere are some songs that simply are profoundly beautiful. KD Lang has collected more gorgeous songs on one CD than anyone else I can think of... and she actually raised the level of each song by gathering them together and giving them her unique, sublime voice. Covers are fickle, and many an artist has stumbled when setting out to reinterpret their favorites. KD Lang brings a sensitive, sensual and deeply appreciative approach here. Some reviewers have said that these songs are "too slow" or "languid"... well, the title of the CD is "Hymns..." so I can't find fault with that. Actually, in a world of mass produced, formulized gruel that passes for music in most genres these days, KD Lang's earthy, spiritual interpretations of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and others is not only refreshing, it reminds me of what music can be when approached honestly and simply. My favorite track is "After the Gold Rush", probably because that song has been in my head for over 30 years. "Valley" and "Hallelujia" are wonderful highlights also... There's not a weak link on this CD. As a collection of cover tunes, it ranks right there with Emmylou Harris' "Wrecking Ball" and Jennifer Warnes' "Famous Blue Raincoat". Yes, it is mellow - and there's a time for that. When that time comes, this CD is just perfect.
Free Music Review: She did it again ! Hit: 5 StarsI love this ! Absolutely wonderful.
Free Music Review: A Place To Go Hit: 4 StarsK.D. Lang's "Hymns of the 49th Parallel" is a good disc that celebrates her fellow Canadian artists. Often softened by strings, as on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," Lang's voice is an amazingly expressive instrument. Ron Sexsmith's "Fallen" is a lovely melody that Lang polishes as she jumps into the upper register, "Love is always on the go." From Joni Mitchell's "Don Juan's Restless Daughter" set, Lang covers "Jericho" and shines Mitchell's idiosyncratic melody with its jazz inflections and unmasks the beauty in the piece, "I'll try to keep myself open up to you; It gets easier & easier to do, just like Jericho, let these walls come tumbling down now." Neil Young's "Helpless" is my favorite track on the set. It is such classic pop material that Lang nails with her vocal commitment, "There is a town in north Ontario, with dream comfort memory to spare, And in my mind I still need a place to go." It's exquisite. This 2004 set peaked @ #55 on the Billboard charts and at #2 on the Canadian charts. It is well worth dusting off this classic covers set that has timelessness as it spans songs from 1969 to 2001. Enjoy!
Free Music Review: Pure gold Hit: 5 StarsThis set of covers sung by kd is truly intoxicating!
Having been a longtime kd fan, I was surprised that I never heard of the CD until a friend played it for me. This is mood music for romance and/or reflection.
The piano production is particularly outstanding, but kd's vocals are simply, well, unparalleled.
Free Music Review: Stark Beauty Hit: 5 StarsAn amazing set of songs sung by an amazing singer. The beauty of lang's voice is a tonic to the senses. She makes all these songs her own. The best being "Love Is Everything" - - one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. kd has never sounded better. This is her at her best.
