Free Music Notes for Hymns of the 49th ParallelFree Music Review: Will touch your soul Hit: 5 StarsIf you are not listening to this CD, you are depriving your soul. Bought this CD for just one song, have played virtually nothing else in my car for several months, and have gifted it to at least 10 people. Everyone has loved it and raved about it, including my classical musician friend. Every song is beautifully and perfectly presented by k.d.lang.
Free Music Review: Pure and Crystalline Hit: 5 StarsMy husband and I have enjoyed listening to Shadowland (our heretofore only CD by KD) for years and decided it was time to explore more of what she has done. KDs beautiful and crystalline voice really blows our hair back on this CD and that's amazing because my husband is bald! We've enjoyed every cut on this CD, especially After the Goldrush and Hallelujah.
Free Music Review: The Most Hypnotic Voice Ever Hit: 5 StarsI was fortunate enough to sit on the front row of a recent k.d. lang concert and was enraptured with her pure vocals. She definitely sings from her soul. I found myself actually teary-eyed, her voice penetrating through the very fibers of my being. Listening to k.d. lang is a truly spiritual experience, as her vocal qualities are simply angelic in nature.
This album is a feather in her cap, as k.d. lang has outdone herself by bringing an entirely different perspective to the covers on it. Listening to each song, I am caught up in a mesmerizing journey. k.d. lang took me to places I have never been before and places I wish to return to often.
Thank you for the experience, k.d. lang!
Free Music Review: Now, music, sound, and sing your solemn hymn Hit: 4 Stars"Hymns of the 49th Parallel" is K.D. Lang's tribute to her fellow-Canadian songwriters and poets. In it she performs one song of her own, two songs each of Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Jane Siberry and Joni Mitchell. She also cover one song from Ron Sexsmith and one from Bruce Cockburn.
They first thing I noticed when I listened for the first time was Lang's rather subdued approach to the songs. I came to know her and admire her for having one of the most beautiful and powerful voices around. Simply put, she can sing the heck out of any song and when I think of Lang I think of bravura performances of songs such as Constant Craving, Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray, and Three Days. However, after a few listens I came to realize that she actually wanted to put the songs and the songwriters on center stage. She does a great job.
Lang's voice is perfect, in my opinion for Neil Young's After the Gold Rush and Helpless. She also does an excellent job covering Joni Mitchell's A Case of You and Jericho. I understand the sentiments of other reviewers who question Lang's covering some of Mitchell's lesser known songs but that made it easier for me to listen to Lang without comparing her to the original artist.
The highlight of the album for me is Lang's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. She starts of singing it like a prayer and build it up until it becomes an anthem by the final verse. It is a magnificent piece of work that had me hitting the repeat button more than a few times.
Ultimately, despite the sometimes subdued songs and sparse arrangements, Lang's voice commands attention even when she wishes to shed light on her compatriots. A voice like Lang's cannot help but shine through.
This is an excellent CD and a must for fans of Lang. For those who are new to Lang I don't think this is a great place to start. I suggest going back to Absolute Torch and Twang, Ing?nue, and her wonderful album of duets with Tony Bennett, A Wonderful World.
Free Music Review: Pure Enjoyment Hit: 5 StarsThis cd is outstanding! Each song is a gem and k.d.lang does every one of them justice.
