Free Music Notes for Hymns of the 49th ParallelFree Music Review: Sheer Genius! (If you've got the right ear) Hit: 5 StarsI have the God given talent of music appreciation. I am thankful for that. Having said that, my question is, "What are those who score this masterpiece less than perfect listening to?" I have heard kd lang in concert twice. Ingenue & Invincible Summer. What kd does that gets down into everyone's soul, is her delicious, top-range belting wich melts right down into her warm, velvety bottom. It is undeniably one of music's most awesome aesthetic experiences. No denying that. However, Hymns of the 49th Parallel has subtleties. And it's those subtleties that makes this album what it is, but it is also what separates the average ear from the superior one. Like wine, many are ok with white zinfandel but it's those educated ones with refined palettes who will truly enjoy all there is in a complex, mature cabernet.
kd, you have made the BEST 'pinot noir' the world has been lucky enough to come across in a long, long time. Do not be discouraged by those who just "don't know any better."
Hymns of the 49th Parallel is "just right." To quote Brian Martinez "texasbrian"'s review, "Let [this album] be what it wants to be.
Free Music Review: A Five Star Masterpiece( Worth at least Six!) Hit: 5 StarsI have long been a K D Lang fan and consider her voice to be one of the greatest in contemporary music. I have often wished to hear her cover some of my favourite songs. Well at last she has, including Joni's 'A Case of You' and Niel Young's 'After the Goldrush' to name a couple. What a gem this album is. I LOVE every track and each one grows with every listening. I have had this album since its release and consider it her finest and one of the year's must have albums. Turn down the lights, pour a glass of your favourite, put this disc in the player and spoil yourself!
Free Music Review: This is a classic Hit: 5 Stars Having been a fan through a fan, k.d. has always been a fond rememberence for me. Now another friend has re-introduced me to her and I cannot stop listening to this CD. It is a great "chill" record. Very moody, mellow, romantic and it lingers with you.
I for one am very pleased with this performance. I think it has been too long for k.d. to record something she clearly felt passionate about. Thanks, k.d. You have won me back!
Free Music Review: Sweet and stunning Hit: 5 StarsKD Lang is undoubtedly one of the best vocalists of our time and in this album she has culled an exceptional selection of songs from equally talented Canadian songwriters. This is an album to treasure. Give it to yourself or someone you love.
Free Music Review: Hyms of what? Hit: 2 StarsK.D.has one of the best contemporary voices.Like Streisand her lps range from greatly energetic and inspiring,to out of focus, narcissistic and detatched .
Regretfully, K.D. Lang takes all the energy out of these classic canadian songs,by brilliant canadian composers such as Cohen, and Mitchell. She uses far too much effort in making them "sacred".Part of their value is that the originals took creative chances. This cd will never rival the original songs/writers/singers.The comparison makes this effort more lacking. I am starting to feel she is losing creative instinct in terms of her production, and creativity.
Perhaps there is a renaissance in her future.I hope so.
