Free Music Review: Catch for us the Foxes (LP)
Hit: 4 Stars

I won't even try to comment on this wonderful album, in my mind it is their best release (even in the shadow of the beautifully crafted Brother, Sister album), it blends their older, more heavy style with their noticible nuances and extremely original style that is pronounced in Brother Sister. Mostly, I mean to comment on the Vinyl release of this album. The record label is Gilead Media, and they have many other wonderful bands. It sounds as if it were mixed seperatly for vinyl (if you've ever heard a song that was mixed for digital media pressed on vinyl, you know what an advantage it is to have a seperate EQ for vinyl), which is extremely pleasing. It's pressed a bit off center, but nothing too extreme, but if your turn table is really sensative, you might here the WOW a bit. Gilead Media has a thing about pressing a lot of their records on colored vinyl, which is amazing, and the album artwork is beautiful. If you look closely, cut into the blank space at the end of the record on both sides, there is usually some nice tidbit on both sides from the lyrics of a song, very nice touch.

The only thing that I was a little dissappointed about was:
It's not virgin vinyl, and you can very easily hear it.

But, don't let this keep you from buying the LP, it's cool factor is just way too high for this not to be worth the 12 bucks.

"A to B: Life" was released with Gilead Media also.
"Brother, Sister" was released by Burnt Toast Vinyl, pressed on virgin 180gram vinyl, very valuable and high quality, GET IT.

Free Music Review: Carousels = great. Album = good.
Hit: 5 Stars

Great stuff. Good lyrics and music. Original execution.
I like this album a lot. This is truly original band. No way to compare tp anyone else...
I heard that "carousels" was not originally intended to be placed on the cd, but this is my favorite song; Glad it's there.
Good job!

Free Music Review: "Some One Make Me Afraid of What I've Become"
Hit: 5 Stars

I didn't like this album the first time I listened to it...or the seventh. The vocal style was unfamiliar and grating and no less than 3 references to thoughts of suicide raised questions as to whether I would be able to identify with the song writing. But for some reason I kept going back and somewhere along the way it became my favorite CD. I can't seem to listen to it too much. While it is true that mewithoutYou's vocal style is legitimately unique it is the song writing that sets these guys apart...evoking a forgotten desperation that I both require and miss. Just a few of my favorite lines:

"you watched me like a 10 car highway wreck with detached, vulgar curiosity.'

"Oh, but clever words on pages turn to fragments, circles, points and lines,
And they cover them like carpets with graceful, meaningless, ornamental designs.
Come quick, You Light that knows no evening... come, alone to the alone.
There's a thousand half-loves well worth leaving to take your madness home,"

"Rehearsed indifference tossed aside,
Our narrow arms spread wide,
"What unseen pen etched eternal things on the hearts of human kind...
But never let them in our minds?"

"And all my laughter ends in emptiness and a hard rain's gonna fall.
My every medicine causes more illness and a hard rain's gonna fall,...
But now I spend my days in ever-increasingly complicated ways,
Convincing myself of the rightness of each word I say."

My Exit, Unfair is my favorite song on the album but The Soviet, Carousels and Seven Sisters are each outstanding and there really isn't a bad song. Be patient and read the lyrics. Both will be rewarded.

unique modern rock music, that's good for the ears and soul. Aaron Weiss for
real, the lyrics, and the delivery are perfect. Mostly spoken word, over really good music. This is some pretty intense stuff, even more intense is seeing them live.

Free Music Review: So Unique it Hurts
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm actually giving this record five stars, a first for me on this site. I am giving it five stars simply because this is a record everyone should listen to once. It may not be for everyone, but everyone should definitely give it a try as this is an absolutely unique band.

There are two standout aspects to this band. The first and most obvious is their singer Aaron Weiss and his strained and dramatic way of singing, which is talking, really. Mr. Weiss is very much a Christian, but he isn't dealing with your standard "praise Jesus" material. Instead we find gut wrenching lyrics about suicide and doubt delivered in Bob Dylan-like poetic form. My favorite line is probably from "Carousels": "If there was no way into God,I would never have laid in this grave of a body for so long." Beautifully dark and striking, especially when sung so exaspertated as Aaron sings it. Reminds me of "The Patient" by Tool.

The second standout aspect in mewithoutYou is the musicianship. I absolutely love the musical breakdowns the band comes up with, especially considering they can come in at any time in any song. "Leaf" is heavily musical throughout where the vocals could really be classified as the bridge in the song. The song structure overal is rather experimental with a de-emphasis on choruses (though they do abound) and more emphasis on overall flow. Some great guitar licks and interplay between rhythm and melody.

Standout tracks for me are "January 1979", "Tie Me Up!" (what a great guitar lick), "Four Word Letter", "My Exit, Unfair" and "Paper Hanger." The latter here is an interesting song for me. I don't really care for the first half of the song, but the ending is such a beast that is even better when you see it live. Really, there isn't a bad song on this record. The only downside is it takes a little while to differentiate some songs from others due to the irregular song structure and that Aaron's vocal stylings in each song is so similar. All that means, though, is that we need to give the record a few more listens and work a little harder with it. As many of us know, this is usually true of the great records that stay with us over the years.

This is a record for everyone who loves music to give a listen to. This includes non-Christians. Forget the label "Christian" and simply listen to the emotion and intensity that this band brings. For a unique sound with great songwriting and powerful lyrics, you need look no further.
