Free Music Notes for Under a Blood Red Sky - Deluxe Edition CD/DVDFree Music Review: Even with the edits, it's still 5 Stars Hit: 5 Stars
In it's longest form (official) yet, this video highlights U2 at what some may say was their peak. The rain didn't damper their fire (if anything the smaller crowd, and dreary surroundings make them even more exciting) and this was a showcase for the band and the venue.
I first saw them right around this time on the tour and this was how I became a lifelong U2 fan.
As far as the picture and sound, it is top notch. Much brighter and crisper than the previous Laserdisc / VHS. The sound is a bit better than the old laserdisc, but not as improved as the picture.
The concert is missing just a few things. "I Fall Down" is not included in the set at all because of (from the liner notes) "A camera malfunction" and Two Hearts is missing a snippet of "Lets Twist Again" and Electric Co is missing about 2 minutes of "Send in the Clowns", cutting out the Edge's on FIRE guitar solo.
All in all, nice to see a more complete, better looking package. While I miss the solo/send in the clowns bit, I would rather gain the additional tracks, much improved picture and lose 2 minutes than go back to the laserdisc.

Edited to ADD: Many folks are complaining about the red lines or streaks in the picture. This is the result of using tube cameras to videotape the concert. Before CCD Camera Technology, Tube cameras were used to videotape, and any time they are pointed into a bright light, then moved, it can cause the streaking that you see. This is not a defect of the DVD, nor something that could be easily corrected. It was in the original version as well, but the better clarity is probably showing it off a bit more.
Free Music Review: Before they were superstars Hit: 5 Stars
Finally, this classic concert movie is on DVD, along with the mini album that captures U2's War tour wonderfully. The DVD includes the other songs from their famed Red Rocks concert in Denver Colorado in 1983 which were not on the original VHS tape, but that were on a widely circulated bootleg of the show. This concert, even though the crowd was cut in half due to the cold and rainy weather, was a landmark show that put U2 on the national map in much the same way that their Live Aid performance in 1985 catapulted them on their way to super stardom. This show captures them at that point when they were transitioning themselves into a major rock act, showcasing their talent of bringing the audience close together and to them on the stage. They were still honing their sound and their playing, and the sheer emotion of this performance is set against the eerie fog and cold of the evening. Highlights of this DVD are New Years Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, I Threw a Brick Through a Window, and Electric Company. It had their trademark ending song of 40, which is base on the 40th Psalm. Great band, great DVD and CD. If you are just getting into U2's more recent stuff, you need to listen to this to get a feel of where they have come from.
Free Music Review: Glorious! Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great and very honest record! and, as someone here said before, it was made at a time when U2 wasn't that monster that is now. In terms of music, this is a pure, total and absolute rock and roll album. Damn! wish I was there...compared to the Pop Mart or the Vertigo tours, "Live At Red Rocks" is superior. It comes 25 years later to justify why U2 is among the greatest bands in rock. Personally, my favourite songs are "An Cat Dubh" - "Into The Heart" and "11 o'Clock Tick Tock".
Recently, when it was released the DVD "Vertigo 2005: Live from Chicago", it was those two songs (An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart) the ones that meant something for me, because I saw a moment of true communion between The Edge and Adam Clayton as long as they were playing those songs...it was like both of them were transported for one moment to the 1983 days...days of honesty and rock and roll.
That's what "Live At Red Rocks", the DVD, offers...honesty and rock and roll. Buy it, the packaging is nice and if you already have the remastered versions of the first 3 albums, then you got to complete the collection.
Free Music Review: Deluxe Edition: An Electric Collection Hit: 5 Stars
This 5 star is essentially combining the live mini CD with the Live at Red Rocks DVD. In my mind the DVD is the headliner because it so great seeing the band in their formative years with 17 tracks, it is a set befitting the bitterness of their epic songs. Packaged alone the live CD is way too short; so, bravo to the overall packaging. On that note the design & package is a booklet inside a sturdy outside sleeve, beautifully packaged.
The music is electric, the content and execution on both CD & DVD are great and need no further accolades from me. On both, Adam Clayton's outstanding bass playing shines through quite brilliantly. *The quality of the DVD has been questioned by the reviewers on the "Live at Red Rocks" DVD, at that I say take it for what it is because it does not take away from the fantastic performance and the Sound Quality is Great!
I highly recommend U2 Live: Under a Blood Red Sky - Deluxe Edition, whether you are a casual or die-hard fan.
Free Music Review: Would have loved to see an expanded CD, but it doesn't matter! Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a fan of the CD for many years, but I had never actually seen the concert video until now. This video is amazing, definitely worth the price of admission. As one of the earlier reviewers wrote, you hear the definitive versions of most of the material featured here, and for my money, this was U2 at their height - they may have gone on to become superstars, but this was really them at their best. The music is sharp, cutting, and well-played, and the cameras caught some extremely dramatic shots, made even more so by the elemental factors, the rain, the temperature, etc. I personally would have loved to have seen the CD redone and expanded, but lets face it - if you already have the CD, you're getting this for the video, and the video alone is worth the acquisition. I would call this one of the best concert film/videos of the '80s. The packaging is also good (as with all of their recent reissues), and I enjoyed the still photos. All in all, a great package.
